Day 31: Resting in Pueblo

Rest days are so much fun! We had a lovely, leisurely breakfast (salad again!) at Barbara's, did some laundry, and headed out for the day. After a disappointing encounter at the post office, Alix and Sonja split up (for the longest time yet?) so Alix could get her fingerprints done. We met up again at the hairdressers.

We learned a lot about Pueblo from our hairdresser (who Barbara recommended). We enjoyed chatting with her and it was such a relief to finally have slightly shorter hair! Its amazing how fast hair seems to grow when its short. When we were ready to pay, we found out that Barbara was covering our haircuts! What an amazing surprise.

After lunching at a local Indian buffet (probably the first Indian restaurant we've seen the whole trip), we headed to the arts center in town. We had run into a woman at the post office who told us to come by and she would let us into their summer exhibit for free! The arts center was quite impressive and the people there were really kind. Apparently news of our coming had preceeded us! We had fun exploring the steampunk exhibit and the children's museum.

It was really fun to be able to get to actual places around the city on our bikes. It made us want to live somewhere where bike commuting is possible. And city riding was a nice change of pace from riding on the highway. After the arts center, we spent some time at the local coffee shop updating our blog. Then we headed back to Barbara's for a delicious home-cooked Italian dinner (eggplant, squash, pasta, tomato sauce). She even fried us some local goat cheese to go with it, which is a delicacy in that part of Colorado. Yum!

During dinner, Barbara told us about the excellent high school production of Fiddler on the Roof she had seen earlier that week, which we had seen signs for around the city. We had talked about going earlier and realized that there was a showing that night! Barbara called a friend and was able to secure us tickets to the almost sold-out show (thanks Barbara!), so we decided to go. Apparently the summer musicals put on by local highschool kids are an institution in Pueblo and always pack the auditorium (even for the six showings this year!). We were incredibly impressed with the students, both actors and musicians, and really enjoyed the show... even if it meant we stayed up past our bedtime! We were singing Fiddler songs for the next few days.

Barbara's magnificent garden. She shares her produce with all her neighbors!
