Day 26: Donkeys and Zebras and Camels, oh my! (Newton to Nickerson)

Newton to Nickerson: 55 miles

We spent the evening in Newton, KS, with another wonderful warmshowers family. We had a wonderful taco salad (we've decided it's one of the best metals for guests) and learned a lot about different denominations of Mennonites. Turns out there are a lot of differences among the Mennonites!

In the morning, we went to a bike shop and got our bikes super clean.

New meaning to "fat tire" :)

Check out that sexy American flag!

Sometimes we take showers; sometimes our bikes take showers.
After a lovely picnic lunch near the public library, we biked on. Our first stop: dollar general for sunscreen. Unfortunately, we were thwarted in our hunt for our favorite sunscreen, and were forced to purchase a tube of "bad sunscreen." (Spoiler alert: we have since found the "good sunscreen" at a different Dollar General and are only using the bad stuff occasionally.)

Fried pickles in Buhler, KS
We really enjoyed the little town of Buhler, KS, and the little cafe we hung out in escaping the late afternoon sun.

Everyone in town was so friendly! As most Kansans apparently are...

Then on the way to the next town, Wer found some surprising and out of place animals...

Pre-Dinner Camels
I guess we're not in Kansas anymore...
The grocery store in the little town (Nickerson) we stayed in that night had closed by the time we rolled in, and the selection at the gas station wasn't particularly dinner worthy, so we went out to eat asset the only other place open. The selection of beer at the bar was paltry (bud light and comrades), but the food wasn't bad at all. And we had a great chuckle when Alix had to SIGN for her medium-rare burger. What?!

Our Grocery-Store-Was-Closed Dinner (Sonja's salad with Dorothy dressing!)

Surprisingly good fried cod

"Western burger" (cheddar, bacon, fried onion, BBQ sauce)

Slept in the very pleasant town park.
