Between Haswell and the next-closest town lies almost 40 miles of nothingness. So, we had to buy breakfast foods at the gas station/antiques/tractor materials/food shop, aka the only shop in town. There was certainly a better selection of tractor repair materials than of foods Alix and Sonja like, but we made do with an Arizona iced tea/lemonade, corn chips, bean dip, and leftover cashews. Dinner of champions followed by a breakfast of champions? (We miss canned greens!)
Riding without terrible winds is refreshingly delightful. Plus there were no cars on the road so we could ride together much of the way that morning. The new desert landscape has been fun to get to know.

Grocery shopping was fun: vegetables (fresh ones!), decent cheese, a cheapish avocado, more mustard. We pedaled to Boone (the second one of our trip!), stopping at the home of a lovely elderly couple for water on the way, with an amazing tailwind. A storm blew in shortly after we got into Boone, so we sought shelter in a (the) general store for our lunch. The storm was beautiful-- strong, strong winds mixed with a decent amount of much-needed rain.
A new favorite: lettuce wraps. This one had avocado, Swiss cheese, black beans, mustard, carrots, cucumber. |
